A School That Creates Critical Thinkers
At South Lee, we believe that nurturing creativity is fundamental to a child's educational journey. Creativity flourishes when children are encouraged to think critically, develop strong thinking skills, and embody the characteristics of effective learning. By fostering traits such as resilience, independence, imagination, perseverance, collaboration, curiosity, and leadership, we create an environment where children feel confident to explore ideas, take intellectual risks, and grow into reflective, inquisitive learners.
At South Lee, students are encouraged to know how their mind works and to learn from their mistakes. Noticing and understanding the way you think is called metacognition and is the fabric of teaching and learning at South Lee. Teaching metacognitive skills promotes independence and resilience, and creates the problem solvers and critical thinkers of tomorrow.
We use De Bono’s Thinking Hats to encourage and enhance thinking by providing a structured approach that helps students approach problems from multiple perspectives. Each "hat" represents a different mode of thinking, guiding students to consider various aspects of a situation.

How Critical Thinking Grows
As students progress through South Lee, their thinking skills develop in complexity and depth.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage (Nursery – Reception), children begin by noticing patterns, making simple choices, and starting to explain their reasoning with words like "because" and "why."
As they move into Years 1 – 2, they build on these foundations by sequencing events, making predictions, and justifying their choices with phrases like "first," "next," and "then."
In Years 3 – 4, students compare and contrast, identify cause and effect, and infer meaning from information that is not directly stated, using terms like "cause," "effect," and "infer."
By Years 5 – 6, learners begin analysing parts of a whole, evaluating effectiveness, and formulating arguments and counterarguments.
Finally, in Years 7 – 8, students synthesise ideas from multiple sources, critically assess bias or reliability, and propose solutions, all while using more advanced vocabulary such as "synthesise," "critique," and "hypothesise." Through each stage, the development of critical thinking prepares them for more complex challenges both in and out of the classroom.
